GAYLORD – When Annabelle Kieszkowski won first place in Manistee Catholic Central’s Sixth Grade Bee Bee during Catholic Schools Week in February, she punched her ticket to attend the 10th annual Bee Diocesan Sunday School at the Center Gaylord Diocesan Pastoral.

Kieszkowski made the trip north on Thursday and took pride in his school with a top 10, placing ninth out of 16 competitors.

“I was excited and nervous at first, but after the first question it wasn’t that scary,” she said. “I’m happy with what I did. It was fun.”

Isabella Chittle of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Middle School in Traverse City won a $ 1,000 tuition credit for her first place finish after 25 rounds of competition. Mei Meachum, also of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and Josephine DeLeo of St. Mary Cathedral School in Gaylord, tied for second and each received a tuition credit of $ 375.

Michelle McComb, who teaches religion in sixth grade at MCC, accompanied Kieszkowski to the event and was proud of her not only for her performance, but also for the hard work she put in in the weeks leading up to the competition. .

“Annabelle had some hurdles to overcome as she had just had foot surgery less than a week ago and was still recovering, but she studied really hard and performed very well in competition,” said McComb. “She would often give up her lunch hour at school to study in my class, and her classmates accompanied and supported her to help her study. I am very proud of Annabelle’s hard work and her excellent attitude when preparing for the competition. “

Dr. Erick Chittle, Deputy Diocesan Superintendent for Catholic Schools, moderated the event.

McComb said the competition has been altered to allow it to run safely.

“It was a little different this year. Due to COVID, only two people per competitor were allowed to come and watch the event, but families were able to watch the livestream provided by the diocese.”
