Christian Worship Hour founder dies at 99

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) – Pastor Harold E. Salem, 99, founder of Christian Worship Hour, died early Friday morning. An obituary released Monday said Salem was surrounded by his family in Aberdeen, South Dakota when he died.

Salem was born in 1921 near Belle Fourche, South Dakota. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in ministry and led two churches and his television congregation for over 76 years.

In 1979, he became one of the first to use television to celebrate church services with the weekly broadcast of The Christian Worship Hour, which is now one of the oldest continuous shows in America. It airs on KMTV at 6.30am on Sunday mornings.

According to his obituary:

“Salem became well known for his love and concern for the elderly in America, and the Hour of Christian Worship became the home church for the trapped, the needy, people and families around the world. . His down-to-earth teaching style focused on sharing the word of God in a way that people of all ages and from all walks of life can understand.

The ministry’s reach has grown dramatically over the past 15 years and shows can now be seen in over 1.6 billion homes around the world.

Pastor Salem and his team at the Hour of Christian Worship had prepared for his promotion (to heaven), and the weekly broadcast will continue, using the hundreds of sermons and devotions recorded over the years covering his incredible ministry.

Pastor Salem’s funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at First Baptist Church, Reverend Gary Compton officiating. The service will be streamed live via Facebook and the Christian Worship Hour website so that friends and supporters can attend from all over the world and will also be available on the website after the date of the funeral. “
